Almost everyone is familiar with the concept of business cards, either because they use them or have received one. For the most part, many people think that you have to either have a company or an important position within one to use business cards.
But today, that is no longer the case and there is more to using personal business cards than as a means of introduction.
The New Calling Card
In fact, you might be surprised to learn that the term "business card" is relatively new. In the past the term "calling card" was used and they were commonplace elements of etiquette in society.
For instance, women and men used calling cards to express interest in a person and give them permission to remain in contact with them.
Before the telephone was invented, people would have to go to an office personally to arrange appointments. The calling card was left at the place of business to secure the meeting.
And although the event was not promoted as an "exchange" calling cards were often given to many people during a social gathering, just as it's done today.
That Personal Touch
The personal business card works on the same premise: when you want someone to stay in touch with you, rather than search for paper and pen to write your information, you simply hand them your card.
The person who receives the card will gain a sense of your character and style. Having cards printed for yourself helps you to be more organized and prepared in your communications with others. They are a great way to boost your self confidence and reinforce the image you want to project.
The nice thing about having your own card is that it gives you a chance to use your creative license and promote your personality. In contrast to the business card for a company, which may need to be conservative, a personal card doesn't have to follow any rules at all.
You can use bold colors, patterns and other graphic elements to tell the world who you are.
Life Management Tool
Another way to look at personal business cards is to think of them as a life management tool. They help you to keep your "personal business" organized, especially when you are involved in several different organizations or activities that require interaction with a wide range of people.
Using a personal card for each of these rather than listing everything you do on one card can make communication easier.
You may know that a lot of people have hobbies that they use to earn money. Catering, word processing, calligraphy, interior decorating are just a few of the "sidelines" people advertise on their personal cards.
And personal business cards are one of the most economical ways to advertise: many people use them to promote causes or events.
Although it's not generally expected, most people impressed when they receive one of these modern day "calling cards" because it makes it easier for them to remember the person and the place where they met.
